Talent Biographies

DJ Paddy mac Paddy Mac, Morning DJ
A recovering sportscaster, rescued from Las Cruces & El Paso where he transitioned from plastic hair and power ties to his current state of dishevelment. Now he mans the mic for the KTAOS morning show and programs the music for KTAOS and Luna 103.7.  A practicing non-practitioner, he's rarely involved in anything that requires... practice. He dotes incessantly on his dog JaBooty, flails at golf balls and weeps openly many Sundays after the latest Cleveland Browns' embarassment. His favorite color is Feldgrau, his favorite food is whatever's on YOUR plate and his favorite movie has yet to be filmed.

Isabel Peña, Midday DJ and Assistant Sales Manager
Isabel has been in radio advertising, in one way or another, for over two decades (maybe more) but who’s counting. She brings to KTAOS her love of community radio and the ability to help local business successfully market their business through effective, creative and affordable marketing campaigns.

Brad Hockmeyer, Late Afternoon DJ
Our founder, Brad Hockmeyer, caught the radio bug as a young boy living just outside New York City and hasn't been able to shake it since. From Boston to Vermont to Taos his passion for music and radio led to the creation of our radio station in 1982. He recently sold the radio station to a group of his employees but continues to host his afternoon show with music giveaways, compelling interviews, news and we can't forget those great segues! We believe that he's truly solar powered!

Ted Dimond, Congo Square
Ted moved to Taos in 1976 to ski and work at Taos’ first FM Station KXRT. 35 years, 4 kids and 12 jobs later, he still skis and loves spinning discs on Congo Square.

Josseph Rynear, Josseph the Star*Watcher
Josseph has been on the air for 34 years with KXRT, KVNM and now KTAO. He studied history, philosophy, German and German literature and modern European literature at Stanford University and later studied Russian at the Army Language School in Monterey, California. After a tour of duty in Germany, he returned to the San Francisco Bay Area for graduate work in American History at San Jose State University, and while there, perhaps surprisingly, also become an astrologer. Behind the meta-physician is an academian…and vice versa.

Rick Haltermann, The Jazz Show
Rick is a musician, photographer and director of the Association of Noetic Practitioners. He has been a radio host on and off for 40 years. His Sunday morning jazz show combines music and poetry (his college degrees in Music and English are finally getting put to good use) with a different theme each week.

Pat Romero Pat Romero, Moccasin Wire
Pat Romero, born and raised on Taos Pueblo, is an Army veteran and a professional social worker who loves working with people. His interest in native music started after returning from military by helping out at a POW WOW, and has been with Moccasin Wire on and off for ten years and mostly for the last five years.

Markus Kolber, Solar Country and Five Corners If you'd told Markus in 2004 that he would move to Taos, become an attorney, play music AND co-host two shows on the radio, he would have given you that look one reserves for folks you're sure are a little "off". In fact, if you'd told him he’d ever leave the home state of seven generations of his ancestors, he would have given you a typically bombastic Texan suggestion about what to do with yourself! Now he understands that a person needs a few "jobs" and at least a couple of heartfelt causes in order to be fulfilled.

John Henderson, Roots & Wires
As Juan Love, John spins positive, conscious and righteous roots reggae straight from the hills of the Blue Mountains and the dancehalls of Kingston. Reggae music tells the truth and that's what he plays.

Jerry Schwartz, World on Tour
Jerry Schwartz has been spinning as DJ Ram at KTAO for 11 years now. In addition to attempting to bring the best of traditional and modern music from around the globe, Jerry is an organic gardener and photographer based in Taos, NM.

Kent Lewis, Through the Looking Glass: Cover Songs Radio
Kent is what we call a music lover and is scholarly known as a "musicologist." He is an expert on the roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  In other words, he knows the jukebox. In addition to his KTAOS radio broadcasts, he gives collegiate musical lectures tracing the evolution of American gospel and field songs, Celtic and American folk music, blues, rhythm and blues and soul to the remarkable and diversified world of Rock and Roll. You never know what musical memories you'll discover when Kent unearths the roots of the Rock Family Tree.

Rick de Stefano Rick De Stefano, Five Corners
Rick is an attorney and a working musician who performs frequently in northern New Mexico as a solo pianist, accompanist for singers, and in groups. His law practice concentrates on business clients. As a musician, he is currently active with the jump blues band, Little Le Roy & Le Blue Reys, and produced, played keyboards, and sang on their first CD, Gift Of The Blues. Rick hosts the weekly regional-music radio show, Five Corners, on KTAO.

Marcus Sanders, Listen Up
Marcus has been at the helm of Listen Up, a no boundaries, high-velocity, fast-paced youth talk show going on ten years. Being a hardcore youth advocate, with a mission to give the youth of Taos a voice, Marcus is proud to navigate the awesome territory of local youth culture. Working with an extremely diverse group of youngsters over the years has been exciting and challenging. From Kids Unleashed to Listen Up, his journey has been inspiring. Listen Up is truly The Voice and Leader of Young New Mexico.

Staff Biographies

Katie Speirs, Production Director/Co-owner
A long time ago – in a trailer far far away (just up the street on Blueberry Hill), Katie started her production career at KTAOS, then moved into the KTAOS Solar Center where she actually used to bartend out of buckets in the Community’s Backyard - before the Station Bar was around.  Her swift editing and creative writing skills have earned her more than a dozen awards from the NMBA for best :30, :60, PSA, and promotional announcement.  And now she actually gets paid to listen to music and decide, with the honorable PD Paddy Mac, about the sound of the station – musically that is, as the Music Director.  What a long strange trip it’s been….and here’s to many more KTAOS adventures!

Kate Black, General Manager / Co-owner
For Kate managing radio, advertising and entertainment in Taos creates an effortless synergy that feels more like a party than work. Kate will always remember the first sale she closed in radio, which resulted in a job offer for KTAOS. Now, three years later, Kate is living her dream by fulfilling her commitment to grow Taos businesses and entertain Taos locals and visitors.

Aidan Bain, Engineer / Co-owner
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, its AIDAN and HERE HE COMES TO SAVE THE DAY!  Our diligent in-house radio engineer/IT dude - who has been with KTAOS for over 5 years, crawling around in ducts, tinkering with wires, climbing scaffolding, aiming solar panels at the sun, keeping the station on air, and dealing with everyone’s computer in the building (just a few of his daily tasks). Radio engineer by day and Soundworks Sound Engineer for the KTAOS Solar Center, and pretty much every event in town, by night.  A hard worker is an understatement, for this man, and always with a happy smile on his face.
Aidan is photographed on Picuris Peak
Shannon Black, Venue Director / Co-owner
Shannon, a native New Mexican who has lived in Taos for 5 years, has over 15 years experience in the bar and restaurant business. Shannon's primary duty is to keep the KTAOS Solar Center and Station Bar full of great live music, cold beverages and a friendly service staff. He likes hiking, biking and being on time. Stop by the KTAOS Solar Center and he'll let you know about the next great band coming through Taos.

Other personal interests include found object art, theatre and performance, hiking, and cooking. Oh, and arm wrestling! She is very happy to be working at such an fun place and looks forward to helping promote all the exciting future events at KTAOS.
